Jimenez, Jefferey

Patricia Arambula, Jefferey Jimenez, Michael Reyes, Louis Rubio and Iris Ybarra are Giraffe Heroes.

For more than two years, these five leaders of South San Antonio High School’s Science Club worked weekends and after school and braved jeers and teasing from other students to pioneer environmental responsibility in their school and in their town.

Srarting when they were high school freshmen and sophomores, Patricia Arambula, Jefferey Jimenez, Michael Reyes, Louis Rubio and Iris Ybarra have led a variety of recycling drives — recycling everything from phone books to overcoats to tin and aluminum; they raised money and planted more than 100 drought-resistant plants and trees on the school grounds; they founded a local “Trees for Life”* group, planting fruit and nut trees for the needy to supplement their diets.

While other high school kids are worrying about cars and dates, these kids work weekends, after school, and often through the summer to complete their projects. In the process, they’re providing a positive example of responsible social action for their peers and challenging the entire community to contribute to solutions for the environmental problems of their region.

* Trees for Life was founded by Giraffe Balbir Mathur.
