Yadav, Jyoti

Jyoti Yadav, barely a teenager, didn't like the fact that her mother was humiliated, ostracized, and deprived of employment simply because she was a widow. That was the norm in India. But Yadav didn't accept the norm. Jyoti knocked on hundreds of doors and, despite physical and verbal assaults, convinced dozens of people that being a widow was not the widow's fault and that widows deserved the same rights as everyone else. Things changed, in Yadav's village and elsewhere in India: Yadav's mother got a job, as did other widows there, and the attitudes toward them started to improve.
