Jenna Johnson of Elon College, North Carolina, encountered resistance from townspeople who said that her proposed shelter for battered women was unnecessary. Certain that there were domestic violence victims with no place to go, Johnson left her teaching job to work at the shelter she created, which immediately began counseling dozens of abused women.

Johnson, Kory

Kory Johnson was 9 when her older sister died from an environmentally-caused heart condition. Because there was a cluster of serious illnesses in their Phoenix, Arizona neighborhood, Kory took the issue on, forming Children for a Safe Environment to protest the pollution of low-income neighborhoods that lack the political clout to safeguard themselves.

Johnson, Patricia Riley

Growing up poor gave Patricia Johnson of Washington DC the determination to make life better for as many people as she could. She gave up her paying job and worked endless hours to make Christmas in April a national movement. Christmas in April volunteers in nearly 500 cities across the nation install new roofs, wheelchair ramps, paint walls and repair plumbing in the homes of the elderly, the disabled and the poor.

Judith Johnsrud of State College PA, a former geography professor, lost her academic advancement, her health, and her own financial well-being to write, speak and testify about the dangers of radiation. Called the best informed anti-nuclear activist in the US, Johnson called for increasing radiation protection standards and controlling radioactive wastes.

Johnston, David Cay

Reporter David Cay Johnston of Ocean City, New Jersey, used to write investigative stories for the Los Angeles Times. There he uncovered fraud in the United Way's use of donations and reported on the Board of Education's hiring of an accused child molester as an ethics teacher. Threats did not stop Johnston; being repeatedly pulled off stories did. He reported no such constraints on his new job as a reporter for a Philadelphia paper.
