Daley-Harris, Sam

Sam Daley-Harris of Washington, D.C., was a symphony percussionist and music teacher when learning about hunger around the world inspired him to become a grassroots lobbyist on the issue, though he knew nothing about lobbying and had no funding for the work. No matter. The organization he founded, RESULTS, is credited with helping save the lives of millions children around the world every year and has been called “pound for pound, the most effective lobbying group in Washington.”

Dalton, Robert

Robert Dalton of Davidsonville MD is a member of Vietnam Revisited, a crew of veterans intent on rebuilding the country they once fought in. Dann, Carrie

Shoshone elder Carrie Dann has fought the US government for over four decades over the Shoshones’ right to their tribal lands, part of which have recently been disputed by rancher Cliven Bundy and the government. Dann has endured federal attacks on her home, confiscation of her cattle and horses, and constant threats of expulsion from land that has been Shoshone for millenia. She is standing her ground, in the courts, in the media and on her ancestral land.

Darby, Preston

Physician Preston Darby of San Angelo, Texas, risked his life to give medical care to the Afghans fighting the invading Soviet army. Disguised as an Afghan, Darby sneaked past Soviet border guards and went through combat zones to reach the Afghans' mountain hideouts and care for their wounded.

Dawson Schneter, Marian

Journalist Marian Dawson of Whitehall, Michigan, alerted the community and pressured public officials to take action when Giraffe Warren Dobson challenged a major chemical corporation that was using the area as a toxic dump site. Despite harassment and threats, Dawson organized residents and pressed for court orders to stop the poisoning of the community.

De Vries, Gina

When she was only 12, Gina DeVries came out to her family and her parochial school classmates as a bisexual. Her family was supportive but her classmates were extremely hostile, as she knew they would be. She became a champion for the rights of all kids to be treated with respect, speaking at schools and other public forums, no matter how hostile they were.

DeChristopher, Tim

Tim DeChristopher, worried that U.S. public lands were being despoiled by oil- and gas-drilling companies, impulsively bid against them in an auction that would have turned a large chunk of Utah over for exploitation. He bid the lands too high for the corporate buyers to match and still make the profits they needed. Since he had no money to make good on his bids, he was arrested, tried, and imprisoned for almost two years in a governmental effort to deter future protests. Instead, his actions have inspired many more environmentalists to stage civil protests against the sale of public lands.

DeerInWater, Jessie

Jesse DeerInWater of Vian OK was appalled when a powerful company announced plans to drill wells near nuclear waste storage facilities. She organized Native Americans for a Clean Environment, which has stopped the waste storage plan and is pressing other environmental issues. DeerInWater was fired from her hairdressing job; she is studying to be an environmental lawyer.

Morris Dees of Montgomery AL, an attorney and founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, ignored repeated death threats to successfully sue the Ku Klux Klan and win their financial assets for the family of a young African American lynched by Klan members.
